In its 23rd year, the Somers Art Fair is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s much-loved community events, bringing more than 5,000 people to Somers Primary School for a day celebrating art, creativity, music, food and local community.
Held in the beautiful coastal village of Somers, the Somers Art Fair combines a major art exhibition and auction with a large-scale community event.
Happening on Sunday October 25th from 10am to 5pm, entry is gold coin donation and visitors can enjoy:
• A major art exhibition featuring work from renowned Mornington Peninsula artists and artists from further afield
• Outdoor sculptures throughout the school grounds
• Children’s art and hands-on creative activities
• Market stalls and local makers
• Food trucks, coffee, wine and a bar
• Kids’ rides and activities
There is also a stage with demonstrations from local community groups (kids choir, kids dance group) and a live music program. This year our three performing bands artists are:
Tig – Indie pop artist Tig, a local to the Mornington Peninsula and recently awarded Global Emerging Songwriter in the prestigous Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition, has performed with the likes of Kim Churchill, Pierce Brothers, Ainslie Wills.
Emma Yue – Emma Yue makes music for catharsis — confessional folk-pop laced with indie-rock bite. A self-described purveyor of loving and losing, her songs turn the chaos of her mid-20s into emotional time capsules, drawing influence from artists including Gracie Abrams, Ethel Cain and RAGEFLOWER.
Jess Locke – Melbourne songwriter Jess Locke has built a reputation for raw, honest storytelling, dreamy guitars and indie rock that finds beauty in the messier corners of human experience. Her latest album, Real Life debuted at #6 on the AIR Independent Albums Chart and she has shared stages with Paul Dempsey, Ali Barter, Julia Jacklin and Marlon Williams and performed at festivals including BIGSOUND, Falls Festival, Fairgrounds, St Kilda Festival and Yours & Owls.
The Art Fair is also incredibly important to the school. It is Somers Primary School’s most significant annual fundraising event and the main way the school raises money to supplement government funding. Funds raised go towards providing an extensive curriculum and essential infrastructure and resources that would otherwise be difficult for a school of its size to afford.
It’s a great example of a local school, artists, businesses, parents and the wider community coming together to create something much bigger than a school fundraiser.
