Thereโs nothing quite like seeing a childโs face light up with wonder at a live theatre performance. Frankston Arts Centre believes theatre should be a joyful and welcoming experience for everyone – especially families with young children. Thatโs why they offer inclusive shows, including Relaxed Performances designed with kids in mind.
What is a Relaxed Performance?
โRelaxed performances are an incredible way for families to enjoy live theatre togetherโoften for the first time!โ explains Cath Hedge, Team Leader Programming & Engagement. โYouโll experience a specially adapted show in a comfortable, supportive environment. These performances are ideal for children, especially those sensitive to bright lights, loud sounds, or new settings.โ
During a Relaxed Performance, house lights remain dim, volume is softened, and audiences can come and go as needed. A designated chill-out space is available for breaks. โThere are many ways audiences show their enjoyment,โ says Cath. โSome might clap or sing along, while others rock, sway, or take a little walk. Some kids feel more comfortable with headphones or a screen, just peeking at the stage occasionally.โ โAt a Relaxed Performance, thereโs no โrightโ way to experience the show,โ she adds. โEveryone can enjoy it in their own way.โ
Though designed to support individuals with Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, and sensory sensitivities, Relaxed Performances offer a laid-back theatre experience any family can enjoy. Theyโre ideal for parents introducing babies or energetic toddlers to live theatre in a flexible setting. Parent of three, Sophie, shares, “I initially thought Relaxed Performances were only for families with special needs, but the Box Office reassured me theyโre for everyone. It was a relief to be in a space where a vocal audience was expectedโI wasnโt constantly shushing my kids!”
A Welcoming Space for All
A traditional theatre setting can feel overwhelming, so Frankston Arts Centre makes thoughtful adjustments to ensure a relaxed atmosphere. “When a child has sensory sensitivities or anxiety in busy places, it affects the whole family,” says Cath Hedge. “Itโs heartbreaking when a child is excited for an event but has to leave early due to loud noises, queues, or bright lights.” “Thatโs why Relaxed Performances are so important. They create a welcoming space where families can enjoy live theatre together without stress. Parents donโt have to worry about keeping their kids perfectly still and quiet, and children can engage in a way that suits themโwhether moving around, making noise, or simply soaking up the magic at their own pace.”
Thoughtful Planning for a Magical Experience
At Frankston Arts Centre, accessibility is a core part of their mission. Staff and audience members at a Relaxed Performance are just that โ relaxed! Every theatre season, they ensure there is at least one Relaxed Performance. They work closely with producers, directors, and performers to make sure these adaptations enhance the experience without taking away from the magic of the show.
โFor my family, and others with children with additional needs, familiarity and preparation is important when going on an outing,โ explains local Mum, Bec.
“Frankston Arts Centre has a great social story available on their website with pictures that help families know what to expect, from the foyer to the theatre and how things will unfold,” says Bec. “We often do โdrive byโ visits to new places before an outing, casually pointing out the building and entrance to make the experience feel less daunting. I also like to pre-book aisle seats, just in case we need to step out for a break.”
A Special Show Just for Kids!
This seasonโs Relaxed Performance is Mario the Maker Magician, dubbed โthe best kidsโ magician in the world,โ on Wednesday, 24 September at 10:30 am. Full of fun, laughter, and interactive magic, this show is perfect for kids aged five and up. From Peppa Pig to Madagascar the Musical, Victorian Opera, beautiful puppetry, world-class circus performances, and moreโthereโs something for everyone at Frankston Arts Centre in 2025!
