Dad will love nothing more than a handmade present on Father’s Day!
Have some fun making a cool and handy Father’s Day gift by creating an easy
D.I.Y. key holder which dad can hang in the house, office or shed.
Remember to write a special message to dad on it!
Tools:
- Pencil
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Stapler
Materials:
- Grunt 300mm Jute Twine
- Balsawood Sheet Boyle 915 x 75 x 25mm cut this into 6 x 15cm blocks
- TIC 25mm Brass Plated Cup Hooks – 25 Pack
- Coloured paint
Steps:
Step 1: Prepare
Ask a grown-up or a Bunnings team member to cut the Balsawood to your preferred length. A good size for a key holder is approximately 15cm.
Handy hint: The Balsawood can be cut for free in store by a Bunnings team member
Step 2: Paint
Now it’s time to get creative and paint the front and edges of your key holder. Firstly, choose dad’s favourite colour and paint around the edge of the wood. Once the sides are dry, paint the front with either the same colour or a different one.
Handy hint: Use top to bottom long brush stokes to produce a neat and clean finish
Step 3: Message to dad
Wait for the paint to dry and then write a special message to dad on the front of your key holder. Make sure you use bright colours so it stands out!
Handy hint: If you don’t have much space a good idea is to write DAD on the front of your key holder
Step 4: Create the hanger
Once your special message to dad has dried, use a pair of scissors to cut some twine and fold it in half to make a loop. You will need approximately 20cm to 25cm of twine to do this.
With the help of a grown up, turn the wood over and position the twine at the top edge, open up the stapler and press down hard to release the staple. Do this for both sides of the twine.
Step 5: Attach the hooks
Now it’s time to add the hooks for dad’s keys to hang on. On the front of the hanger mark two spots around the middle of the wood, leaving approximately a 5cm space between each spot.
Now simply screw in the hooks on each of the spots, making sure they are facing upwards when they are screwed in. Your key holder is now complete, just in time for Father’s Day!
