Nothing for Teens on the Peninsula? Think Again!

By Amanda Bennets

Ask most parents on the Mornington Peninsula what the tricky part of a family day out is, and it’s rarely finding something to do. The problem lies with finding something to do that an eight-year-old, an eleven-year-old and a sixteen-year-old will all agree to get in the car for.

Take an ordinary peninsula family: the eight-year-old wants anything with an animal, a maze or a jumping castle in it. The eleven-year-old wants to be doing something, ideally something a bit competitive, and is deeply unimpressed by anything that sounds like it’s “for little kids.” And the sixteen-year-old wants to be somewhere that doesn’t feel like a family holiday brochure. (Actually, they would probably prefer to be somewhere withOUT the family but hang on a sec… help is on the way!) Getting all three to agree on a destination can feel harder than the drive there.

The good news, and it’s a genuine surprise to a lot of local parents, is that the peninsula has quietly built up a run of places that don’t split by age in the way people assume. There’s plenty written up already about what’s great for little ones, and plenty for the grown-ups (the wineries and providores aren’t going anywhere), but what gets missed is the middle: the stuff that an eleven-year-old and a sixteen-year-old will both actually want to do, often standing right next to their parents doing it too.

Boneo Discovery Park, out past Rosebud, is a good example of what that looks like in practice. Most of the park reads as classic family fare: wetlands boardwalks, a hedge maze, a dinosaur trail, the kind of thing the eight-year-old is already sold on. But tucked into the same one ticket is its NEW Galactic Skirmish, an outdoor laser combat field where teams battle it out across a purpose-built battlefield, and Mission Mini Golf, an 18-hole course that turns into a genuine sibling rivalry the second someone is three putts behind. Neither of those cares how old you are.

The sixteen-year-old who spent the car trip insisting this was going to be lame is, by all reports, the hardest one to get off the Skirmish field at the end of the session. And when it’s mini golf, it’s often the parents who end up most competitive of all. (No mercy, kids! It is ON.)

That same idea shows up elsewhere on the peninsula once you start looking for it. Enchanted Adventure Garden at Arthurs Seat pairs a lavender-and-hedge maze with tree surfing and zip lines through the tree canopy, so the eleven-year-old gets the maze and the teenager gets something that actually gets the heart rate up. A short walk (don’t freak out kids… it’s just a figure of speech, you’ll have to drive) from there, Peninsula Hot Springs runs a joint Maze and Bathe package with Enchanted Adventure, which quietly solves the exact problem a lot of families have: the teenager who wants to feel like this wasn’t a kids’ outing gets to finish the day somewhere that feels aimed squarely at them: hot pools, a proper hangout, not a play area.

Ashcombe Maze and Lavender Gardens works on the same logic as Boneo’s own maze; a puzzle that doesn’t care whether you’re eight or sixteen, just whether you can find your way out first. Add in the Arthurs Seat Eagle gondola for the view-chasers and a Searoad Ferries crossing for something that feels like an actual outing rather than an activity, and the makings of a full day that nobody in the car complained about comes together.

So, the next time someone says there’s nothing for teenagers to do on the peninsula tell them there is actually plenty. The peninsula has more to offer for a wide range of ages than it gets credit for. Nobody has to compromise (except for the kid who is forced to sit in the middle in the car), and nobody has to sit this one out.

As the weather warms up, reported snake bites are increasing across the country. To provide peace of mind to people at home, on camping trips and on holidays, SURVIVAL’s Snake Bite KIT is designed so anyone can act quickly and confidently, even when panic sets in.

Most people never expect to treat a snake bite, and that’s exactly why they freeze when it happens. SURVIVAL’s latest Gen 8 range is built around one simple idea: in an emergency, people don’t want to be reading instructions. Every item in the kit carries a pictogram showing what it’s for.

The kit is built specifically for snake bites, plus major bleeds, fractures and sprains.
