Lifesavers are only on duty when the red and yellow flags are displayed. Remember to always swim between the flags at a patrolled beach.
There are a number of patrolled beaches around the Mornington Peninsula.
Point Leo Surf Beach – an attractive, well-maintained beach that offers safe family bathing in summer. The beach backs onto Point Leo Foreshore Reserve, which contains a public park and facilities such as toilets, drinking water, BBQs, tables and playground.
Gunnamatta Beach – a very hazardous beach, with an average of 113 rescues per year, second only to its neighbouring Portsea Beach. Gunnamatta Beach is an exposed, high energy beach with a wide rip dominated surf zone. Make sure to only swim between the flags. Has facilities such as toilets and drinking water.
Mount Martha Beach – it is a popular beach with facilities that include showers, toilets, and drinking water. Parks and shops are close by. If visiting with young children or poor swimmers, be aware there is a drop-off close to the shore.
Mills Beach, Mornington – a popular beach just off the Esplanade, with a grassy picnic area, lifesaving club and a kiosk. Other facilities include toilets, BBQs and tables.
Frankston Beach – relatively safe on the inner bar and in the patrolled area. Watch children as deeper troughs and holes are common. Do not jump off the pier, as the outer bars are shallow. A full range of amenities including toilets, cafe & kiosk, BBQs, grass, tables, picnic areas, shade and shops close by.
Portsea Beach – this beach averages 143 rescues a year, the highest in Victoria. Therefore, the beach is best suited to experienced bathers and surfers. Definitely stay on the bar and between the flags, and clear of the rips, rocks and reefs, particularly at low tide when the rips intensify. Facilities include toilets and a kiosk.
Sorrento Ocean Beach – a popular beach for sun bathers and those wanting more action than at the Sorrento Bay Beach; and relatively safe under average waves. Facilities include toilets, drinking water, BBQs, picnic area and kiosk.
