Why cooking from a young age is so important

As the health industry has boomed, so has the number of health foods that are available to consumers, but Australians are still suffering from poor diets as a result of eating too many processed foods that are high in salt, saturated fat and sugar .

Leading dietitian and Mayver’s ambassador, Susie Burrell, says this is why teaching our children about healthy eating and lifestyle choices from a young age is so important.

“Habits are developed from a very young age and it’s no different with food, so creating an environment at home that encourages healthy discussion around food and its varying nutritional benefits is a great place to start,” Susie says.

“To help your family foster a healthy relationship with food from a young age, it helps to never label food as bad or good.

“Instead discuss why some foods might be considered something only to enjoy once or twice a week and highlight the benefits nutritious foods can provide in your children’s day-to-day activities, like riding a bike, weekend sports or making sure they’ll stay awake during school.”

Susie adds that another great way to help teach your children about making nutritional choices is by making it fun.

“Cooking with kids can be a really enjoyable experience and provides a gateway to discuss the nutritional benefits of preparing recipes with fresh, whole foods with your children, while making special memories too.”

“It’s important not to be too hard on yourself or your children either, sometimes they’ll just want to eat that chocolate bar but know that in time they’ll eventually grow to appreciate and enjoy eating nutritious foods.

“Whether it’s something sweet like Mayver’s PB&J Banana Bread muffins or something more savoury like Mayver’s Simple Chicken Satay Noodles, cooking at home means you and your family can enjoy learning about and of course eating delicious, nutritious food.”

Try some of Mayver’s delicious recipes to cook at home with your family like the PB&J Banana Bread Muffins, the Simple Chicken Satay Noodles which is sure to go down a hit with everyone in the family, or Sam Wood’s Chocolate Stuffed Peanut Butter Cookies.

PB & J Banana Bread Muffins

Time: 60 minutes | Serves: 6
Gluten Free / Dairy Free / Vegetarian / Sugar Free

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups ripe smashed bananas
  • 1/3 cup plant based milk (almond, coconut, soy)
  • ½ cup Mayver’s Skin On Peanut Butter
  • 1 flax egg (1.5tbsp flax powder mixed with 3 tbsp water)
  • Dry Ingredients:
  • 1 ½ cups spelt flour
  • 1 ¼ cups + 2 tbsp coconut/cane sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • ¼ cup raspberries (fresh/frozen/dried)

Toppings:

  • Raspberry chia jam
  • Extra Mayver’s Skin On Peanut Butter
Method
  1. Preheat oven to 180ºC/380ºF.
  2. Smash the bananas in a bowl until smooth. Add in all the wet ingredients together and stir to combine.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients together. Add the dry ingredients to the bowl with the wet ingredients and mix to combine.
  4. Fold in the raspberries to the mixture.
  5. Evenly separate mixture into each muffin tin tray and bake muffins in the oven for 45-50 minutes (check to see if ready by poking knife/skewer through the centre and if it comes out clean, its ready).
  6. When finished baking, transfer muffins to cooling rack and let them cool completely to room temperature.
  7. Once cooled, top each muffin with a teaspoon of the raspberry chia jam and extra peanut butter.

If this is your first experience of winter with a baby you might be wondering what you need to do to protect them from the elements. Babywearing is a wonderful start as you each warm the other. You can top that up with hats, mittens and booties but go easy with coats and suits. Rather than thick single garments, add an extra layer or two. Avoid bulky hoods which can restrict free head movement. Keep in mind, as you rug them up, that your body is a wonderful heat bank for your child. Light layers plus protection for the head, hands and feet is the way to go. You can pop “baby legs” leg warmers on to keep exposed legs warmer.

👀😮 Ooooh..this looks gooooood. Has anyone read the book?

Betrayal and revenge come knocking on The Family Next Door this August!

The ABC, Screen Australia and VicScreen are pleased to announce the thrilling six-part suburban mystery drama series The Family Next Door will premiere on Sunday 10 August at 8pm on ABC TV, with all episodes available to stream on ABC iview.

It’s peak holiday season in the popular seaside town of Osprey Point when an enigmatic stranger, Isabelle (Palmer) rents a family home in a quiet cul-de-sac. As Isabelle charms her way into her neighbours’ homes and lives, she quickly discovers that everyone at Pleasant Court has something to hide. How far will her obsessive drive to solve a mystery push her to expose the truth?

Based on New York Times bestselling Australian author Sally Hepworth’s novel of the same name, this sophisticated and entertaining mystery blends drama and humour while exploring family dynamics through the unique lens of award-winning screenwriter Sarah Scheller (Strife, The Letdown) and Emma Freeman’s (The Newsreader, Interview with the Vampire) character-driven directorial skills.

Bring the kids to experience live theatre at Frankston Arts Centre in August!

An instant Australian classic, Beetle by Legs On The Wall tells the story of a child who finds a friend in her backyard; together they embark on an adventure to search for his family, the now elusive Christmas Beetle.

The magic of the bush habitat is brought to life through Legs On The Wall’s trademark physical storytelling, and animation created from original artworks by beloved children’s author and illustrator Freya Blackwood.

A tale of resilience and hope, Beetle reminds young audiences that there’s an important place in the world for all of us. Reminding us of the delicate balance of the natural world and that all things are connected.

This charming, nostalgic and uniquely Australian show invites children and families to join the adventure, encountering larger than life beetles, stick insects, and other bush critters while finding out about the uncanny nature and delicate balance of the bush environment. See it on Friday 22 August at 11am or 6pm at Frankston Arts Centre. Tickets are available at thefac.com.au or by calling 03 9784 1060.

This also means less user intervention due to fewer replaceable parts, giving you back time to invest in yourself and your business. There is zero warm-up time and a very fast first page out time with EcoTank printers and this, combined with their unique Heat-Free Technology, saves you time, energy, money and allows you greater flexibility for your home or small business. The new Epson EcoTank ET-4950, ET-3950, ET-3900 and ET-2950 printers come with a 24 month EcoTank Back to Base Warranty (12 month standard express warranty and an bonus additional 12 months upon registration) and are available now from https://www.epson.com.au/ecotank/, and all authorised Epson stockists. #epsonecotank #ad @epsonaust @Epson
